When radicalization process in Central Asia is discussed the case of Kazakhstan is mostly marginalized. However, terrorist attacks in the Kazakh soil showed that radical Islam in Kazakhstan is a dangerous issue and needs special attention. This paper will outline the Kazakh policy in fighting Islamic extremism. The development of religious extremism in post-Soviet Kazakhstan and changing government policy in dealing with religious extremism and terrorism are examined. The paper argues that Kazakhstan’s policy in dealing with religious extremism has experienced considerable changes from liberal policy towards the strict control with the combination of preventive measures due to both external and internal intensification of religious extremism.
